Recording at home has never been easier than it is today, and with prices of pro audio gear now within reach of the consumer market – it has never been cheaper. Setting up your studio is not going to break your bank as much as you may think. To get the most of your first studio we want to talk you through a few products that will make your life easier, so you can start with ease of mind.
We have selected a few great choices from several great brands. These choices deliver you professional quality at an affordable price. The setup includes a great amount of flexibility, and is all under £500*.
Studio Grade Recording Bundle
At the heart of every studio is an interface that connects your computer to the outside world. Without an interface there would be no way to change the tiny voltages from your inputs, to the 1’s and 0’s for your computer. So to keep this all within budget, we chose the Focusrite Scarlett 2nd Generation Studio Bundle.
Focusrite have always offered some of the best quality in pro audio gear, and the new generation of Scarlett interfaces maintain this legendary status. The bundle includes the Focusrite 2i2 audio interface, a microphone, a high-quality cable and some great headphones to get started. With the bundle coming in at £209.99 at the time of writing, this is everything you need to start recording.
The Focusrite 2i2 Studio Bundle also includes Pro Tools | First Creative Pack and Ableton Live Lite. These two packages will help you to get the most out of your recording and editing.
There is still plenty of budget left in our £500 studio target though, so let’s see what else we can get to improve our mix!
Professional Studio Monitors
Studio Monitors are a great way of listening back to our mix with an unflattering, yet critical view point. It is ideal to hear the errors in our mixes to correct them before they’re played on the big stage. Whilst headphones can be great for cross referencing and bass response, it’s our midrange and highs that may be lacking. The KRK Rokit RP4 are from the industry leading brand for popular, yet affordable monitors.
The KRK RP4 monitors are perfectly compatible with the Focusrite Scarlett Studio bundle above. At the time of writing this post, a pair of KRK RP4 monitors are just £199.98 and keeps us well within our target price range of £500.
This leaves us with £90.03 to add anything else that may help us get more involved with the mix.
Recording Studio At Your Fingertips
The last item within our budget is designed to put mixing and making music at your finger tips. MIDI Controllers are a fantastic way of creating music in a more musical way. Rather than using a mouse and keyboard to control your computer, why not use faders, knobs and buttons? The Novation Launch Key Mini MKII is from a popular brand of DJ and music production tools. If we take a moment to look over the Launch Key Mini video, it is easy to see why this is such a powerful tool in your kit.
Priced at a convenient £83.99, this leaves us right at the end of our budget with just a little to spend. With this extra money you may want to grab any other accessories that are specific to your requirements. If you bought the Focusrite 2i2 Scarlett Bundle above, you will already have a copy of Ableton Live Lite. However, if you only purchase this MIDI controller, you will also get a copy of Ableton Live Lite.
Your Studio For Just £493.96
With our budget of £500 we have managed to grab all of the items required to start recording and playing back your music in minutes. We added a great MIDI controller to start performing our music with more personality, studio monitors for accurate mixes, and a recording bundle.
