London’s first socially distanced outdoor jam event – Outside Jam

When the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions came into place earlier this year, like the rest of the live music community Cambel McLaughlin. A successful seasoned street performer for some of London’s busiest tourist spots found he was out of work due to being prevented from performing.

With time passing and lockdown restrictions easing recently, Cambel decided to set up London’s first socially distanced outdoor jam event. As a way to give musicians who have lost out on so much work during the pandemic a lifeline in such difficult times and to help bring things back to a new somewhat normal for fans of live music.

Outside Jam works incredibly hard to bring top-quality shows to the people of London and has seen great success in previous concerts in Bartlett Park in Tower Hamlets with impressive turnouts from local residents and others from all over the city of London. More recently Outside Jam will be returning to Clapham Common with a jam-packed 5 pm show this Friday and a 3 pm show this Saturday. Cambel is also in discussions to put on socially distanced outdoor and park festivals, as a great opportunity for musicians all to grow and seek further opportunities in this unusual climate.

Clapham Common – 5 pm – Friday 17th July 2020

Clapham Common – 3 pm – Saturday 18th July 2020

Outside Jam follows a full, strict safety plan to ensure the ultimate safety of both audience and musicians within the guidelines of government law. This includes separate mic stands, microphones and disposable mic covers for those joining the open mic. The ‘stage’ has a thick rope laid around the band that creates a barrier between the crowds to prevent people from getting too close. Outside Jam also features a table set up with hand sanitiser for artists and the public to use when necessary.

After the house band has played their 45 minute set of classics, guest musician bands will be invited to the jam. Where donations can be made in the dedicated tip bag or for those who wish to donate via contactless, there will be a contactless card machine attached to a rod to take donations from a safe distance.

Outside Jam are always on the lookout for other bands or musicians who can take part in performing sets, so if you are in a band and are looking to get back playing again don’t hesitate to get in touch via one of Outside Jam’s social media pages.

All of our Outside Jam events are weather dependent so stay tuned for updates on their social media pages and are legally allowed to play amplified music in this park until 9 pm as long as they are not receiving complaints or disturbing the peace.
